9-Day Cultural Heritage Tour of Bhutan

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Thimphu

  • Warm traditional welcome with white scarves (khadar) at the airport.
  • Drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital that beautifully blends tradition with modernity.

Day 2: Thimphu Cultural Sites

Day 3: Thimphu – Punakha (via Dochula Pass)

  • Continue to Punakha and visit the stunning Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s spiritual and artistic jewel.

Day 4: Village Life and Spiritual Blessings

  • Gentle hike through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple).
  • Visit a traditional farmhouse for a butter tea ceremony and red rice lunch.

  • Overnight in Punakha.

Day 5: Punakha – Gangtey (Phobjikha Valley)

  • Drive to the sacred and peaceful Phobjikha Valley.
  • Visit Gangtey Monastery, and observe monks in their daily rituals.
  • Walk the Gangtey Nature Trail, with prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
  • Overnight in a traditional lodge.

Day 6: Gangtey – Bumthang

  • Travel deeper into central Bhutan, the cultural heartland.
  • Stop at Trongsa Dzong, strategically built with dramatic views.
  • Arrive in Bumthang, home to Bhutan’s oldest temples and stories of Guru Rinpoche.
  • Overnight in Bumthang.

Day 7: Bumthang’s Sacred Traditions

  • Visit Kurjey Lhakhang, Jambay Lhakhang, and Tamshing Goemba.
  • Watch or participate in a butter lamp offering ceremony.
  • Optional: Learn traditional woodblock printing or yak wool weaving.
  • Overnight in Bumthang.

Day 8: Flight to Paro – Leisure Day

  • Take a short scenic flight back to Paro.
  • Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan (7th century).
  • Free time for souvenir shopping or spa.
  • Optional: Dress in gho or kira for a farewell photo shoot in a traditional setting.
  • Overnight in Paro.

Day 9: Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

  • Cap off your cultural journey with the legendary Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) hike.
  • Reflect and absorb the spiritual energy of Bhutan’s most sacred site.
  • Farewell cultural dinner with traditional music and masked dance (optional).
  • Overnight in Paro or transfer to airport the next morning.
